REACh

Registration Evaluation Authorization of Chemical substances and restriction

What’s it?? REACh is a new European regulation (there is only in Europe) that records, examines and evaluates the toxicity of all the chemicals circulating in the European Union. For example, Garnier industry must provide clear explanations and information on the characteristics of all the substances used, like surfactants, oils, extracts, emulsifiers, both to the Committee of REACH which is based in Helsinki, and to consumers. In this way, you ensure that dangerous substances for human people, animals and the environment are classified and included in a list available on the website of ECHA (European Chemical Agency).

The ingredients that are valued toxic or non-degradable will be removed from the market within 10 years. Now you’ll say to me: It is a very long time! Yes indeed, it is. But think about it: before you delete a product  from a market, you need to find an alternative. For example, if you find that the surfactants used by Garnier are carcinogenic, Garnier laboratories should immediately close down and many people lose their jobs; so instead they have the opportunity to search a more eco-friendly solution. Anyway, there’s the other side of the coin. The REACh committee decided to evaluate just the substances produced in quantities> 1tonn/anno, then those niche products as many specific drugs can contain everything they want, as their toxicity will be never evaluated. In addition, if the economic benefits are greater and the elimination of these products is problematic, this substance or cosmetic ingredient will remain in the market. Let me give an example: the DMFU (dimethyl fumarate) is a mold that has already been eliminated as it causes allergies and dermatitis in people who come into contact. Before it was used in the leather of the shoes, fabrics and sofas, and in pharmaceutical products used for the treatment of psoriasi. In particular, it’s the active component of the drug "Fumaderm" and this application will not be subject to restrictions because otherwise the pharmaceutical industry loses the millions of dollars from the sale of the drug.

Why did I speak of a subject as boring to many? (it was the topic of exam!)
I did it in order to show you how we can’t trust in cosmetic companies. Why? Because, even if there are toxic substances in the creams if there are socio-economic benefits, they’ll remain in the market! However the European brands are more controlled and safe for us consumers. Let’s become aware and choose our own wellness!
A big kiss, Ecchi
